Caring for Vintage Jewelry
Vintage costume jewelry has already lasted decades. With a little care, it will last many more.
Wearing
Put your jewelry on last, after perfume, hairspray and lotion, and take it off first. Avoid wearing it in the shower, pool or ocean.
Cleaning
Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. Never soak rhinestone pieces or submerge them in water, because moisture can loosen glued stones and dull their foil backing. Avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.
Storing
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from heat, sunlight and humidity, so stones do not scratch and metals do not tarnish. Lay necklaces flat or hang them so chains do not tangle.
Pearls, Bakelite and delicate materials
Keep pearls away from cosmetics and store them flat. Keep Bakelite, celluloid and tortoise-shell pieces away from heat.
